Spending On School Supplies? Think, Compare Before You Shop

Despite these horrific statistics the fact remains that parents are the single most important influence on children’s decision to drink, smoke or use drugs. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University states that, “Many Parents do not fully understand nor grasp the extent of their influence.” Most children who smoke come from a background of one or more smokers. Will your addictions cause your child/teen to be the next statistic?

School Two uses money earned from the teacher’s soda pop machine to buy gifts and candy. Some teachers use their own money to buy goodies. Parents supply cakes for the cake walk. Everything is free for the kids who come – it is a time for community – not a fund raiser, because so many parents lack extra money.

These children live lives of chaos and insecurity. Never knowing what they might find when they get home, many drop out of school to better control their environments. Tired of having Dad or Mom make inappropriate and humiliating comments to friends, these children are often isolated from their peers. Their most basic needs aren’t met: feeding, clothing, medical care or even shelter, because the alcoholic needs their booze more. Alcoholism is a selfish, destructive and self centered disease, that rips families apart every day in this country.

If you have decided you want to be the one dealing with the behavior problems your child faces in school, don’t give away your parenting power! You are the best judge of your own child. You know what motivates him (or doesn’t). You understand his home life and his heart.

In much the same way as you met a new group of people all those years ago when you had your new-born, there will be a group of other parents in the same situation as you now.

Aside from these pragmatic concerns what is often more important to the parents who choose to home school a child is they are in control of what the child is learning and the pace at which the child learns. Home schooling places the children in their own surroundings and therefore they are more comfortable. The kitchen table with mom or dad cooking, or in there room at a comfortable quiet desk can be the best classroom of all.

Wrong meeting night. Scouts, as the get older, get involved with team sports, other school activities and events which may conflict with the Scout meeting night.

Focus on reading. Reading is the base that the child will build his entire education on. If he learns only this one skill in first grade, he will be prepared for the rest of his school years. Center your first grade curriculum around your reading program. Of course the other subjects are important, but phonics, writing, spelling, and language can all be incorporated into the reading program. History can be taught during story time which is important to any reading program.
